August 3 2023 The first Willard award was presented to Paul Marquardt. The Willard award is named after the extra-extraordinary Rotarian and human being Willard Bill Springer. We lost Bill almost a year ago, but not his spirit as his spirit lives on in all who knew him, especially his daughter Melissa 'Springer' Mecca, who carries on his Rotary Service Above Self as a member of Manitowoc Noon Rotary-Service Above Self. The first recipient of The Willard award is Paul Marquardt who has served the Manitowoc Community for decades and decades. First as our Postmaster. Paul joined Rotary while working, he has continued his commitment to Rotary throughout his retirement. You see Paul weekly at meetings, volunteering at all Rotary events, ringing bells for Salvation Army, counting money at the fair and telling the best stories! Congratulations Paul. Pictured are Paul Marquardt and Melissa 'Springer' Mecca.

MEETINGS CANCELLED UNTIL who knows when

Greetings to my fellow Rotarians,

I hope this finds you and your family well and in good health.  As you listen to the radio or watch the news I am sure you are seeing many cancelation and closings around our community so what I have to announce will probably not come as a surprise.  In an effort to protect each other and out of a concern about the spread of the COVID-19 virus, our Noon Rotary Board has come to the decision to Cancel all Rotary meetings though April. This is part of a community and national effort to minimize the spread of the disease.   I also want to thank Chris Kornely for speaking with the Holiday Inn on this matter. As an FYI, the Morning Rotary is also canceling meetings as well as their Pasta Dinner Fund Raiser and the TR Club is discussing this later this week.

We will continue to monitor local and national news sources in regards to these health concerns as we navigate thought these troubling times.  Additional up to date and accurate information about the virus is available on the CDC web page and I advise you all to monitor this source of info as well.

I want to thank you all for your help on this and wish you all the best of health!  Please take care of yourselves and your families!

I have included  Mark Maloney's email about Rotary on a international scale to you  in this email also.  Stay in touch and in good health!!

Dear Fellow Rotarian,

The COVID-19 coronavirus is affecting every aspect of our lives in real time, and this puts Rotarians in an unfamiliar place. As People of Action, we are most comfortable when we are fully engaged in the world – moving freely, meeting openly, and offering helping hands. These are very difficult times for people who, like us, are at our best when we are learning, growing, and serving—together.

We are also leaders in our communities, and these times call for leadership. In many ways, this also is our time. We have proven abilities to reach out and collaborate to offer immediate help to people in need at a rapid pace. These are precisely the skills needed all over the world today. The global effort against COVID-19 depends on actions taken in every country. Rotary has the unique ability to help improve those efforts in every community and every country.

Using all the technology we have at our disposal, we as Rotarians can continue to reach out and collaborate on big projects with Rotary clubs, Rotaractors, and Interactors. There are a number of examples where Rotary clubs are helping health authorities communicate best practices or provide needed equipment or support that have been shared with our leaders around the world.

As Rotary’s president and president-elect, we have been thinking of these issues very seriously in regard to upcoming Rotary events. As you may be aware, we have made the difficult decision to cancel two Rotary Presidential Conferences honoring our relationship with the United Nations- one in Paris, another in Rome. In the near term, we recommend that Rotary districts and clubs cancel or postpone meetings or events following the advice of national and local health officials.

We know that clubs and districts are seizing the opportunity to become leaders in their communities and are making better use of technology in this time of need. For example, a Rotary e-club in Italy held a live online session about COVID-19 awareness, a Taiwan club worked with companies and a pharmacy association to donate 1,600 bottles of hand sanitizer to the city of Ji-Long, and Rotary clubs in Sri Lanka helped upgrade software and hardware for the health promotion bureau to assist its social messaging.

We cannot know quite yet what path this virus will take. We know we can play a role to help “flatten the curve,” reducing the number of cases in the short term to allow our health systems to address this issue. If the collective global effort helps bring the situation under control, then we hope to re-embrace our core values at the 2020 Rotary Convention in Honolulu. Our time together will have greater meaning and purpose than ever.

Please know that we are taking a close, continuing look at our plans for the convention in June to make sure all attendees’ safety will be protected. We are following the lead of the world’s most trusted sources, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for their guidance. We want you to be able to make decisions about what is best for you and your families in terms of attending this year’s event.

In the meantime, this is an opportunity for us to demonstrate that Rotary Connects the World in innovative ways. We should be closely following the advice of the WHO and local health authorities. Again, this includes canceling Rotary club events and meetings in the short term to reduce unnecessary interactions that could cause infections. We can put a greater emphasis on the work we do in our communities by helping our less fortunate neighbors cope with the effects of isolation and fear, or by supporting our health authorities to address this situation.

We are dealing with this situation in real time. Please visit the rotary.org COVID-19 response page for ongoing updates.

This is an unprecedented challenge for nearly all of us. But it is also an opportunity for Rotarians to find new, meaningful ways to lead individuals and communities to connect and do good in the world.

We have never been prouder to be part of an organization that does so much to protect and strengthen our communities, at home and across the globe.

Kindest regards,
Mark Daniel Maloney

Manitowoc Noon Rotary raised the most money ringing bells for

Salvation Army in the group category.  $10,167.00 was collected, $1821.00 more than last year and $2448.00 more than the closest competing group.

Thank you to all the Rotarians who gave their time ringing bells.

We would all agree it is a very gratifying activity.  Thank you to

all Rotarians who made generous donations during our pass the

bucket meeting.  Thank you Dave Diedrich for leading the effort !

April 7 Meeting Summary

Posted by Christine Kornely on Apr 12, 2011
Members Amy Fricke, Terry Stevenson and Justin Nickels enlightened us during their Take 5's.  We learned Justin has wanted to be President since seeing the moving Independence Day.  Won't it be fun to say we know the President of The United States someday in the future?  Terry shared his love of communication.  Amy told us her favorite color is pink, as we did not know, and affirmed her commitment to our community.  Take 5's are an opportunity to get to know what really makes your fellow Rotarian who they are.  Don't miss the next set of Take 5's May 5.  Sharing their lives with us will be Kathy Schmill, Val Mellon, and Steve Smith.

POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR FEBRUARY 27, 2014

Posted by Christine Kornely

Officer Paul Behrendt

Officer Paul Behrendt, a 17-year veteran of
the Manitowoc Police Department, is being
honored for outstanding professionalism in
all aspects of his job.

He began his career in September, 1996 on
the midnight shift. Officer Behrendt served
as a Police School Liaison Officer at Washington
Jr. High School from March 2001 to
July 2005. He was transferred to the day
shift in 2009 where he currently serves.

Officer Behrendt is a motorcycle officer and, since 1999, has been involved
with the department’s Tactical Training Program. He is a certified instructor
in Firearms, EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operators Course), Vehicle Contacts,
and Professional Communication. Officer Behrendt has also been a long
time participant in the Manitowoc Police Department’s Citizens’ Academy.

Officer Behrendt is described as a “highly motivated instructor who takes
responsibilities very seriously.” He demonstrates leadership, commitment
and professionalism while carrying out his duties as a patrol officer and with
his involvement in training. Officer Behrendt is married to Cindy Behrendt

and has two children, Kyle, age 17 and Brooke, age 13.

Carol Gulbrand

Carol Gulbrand is a 10-year WalMart service desk

employee, honored with assisting Sgt. Bruce Jacobs of
the Manitowoc Police Department to protect Manitowoc
area citizens from scammers.

One often-used scam is for the perpetrator to call a potential
victim, posing as a relative, and asking that money
be sent to alleviate some dire circumstance. It can
be very convincing because of the availability of family
information on the Internet. Rather than sending cash or
a personal check, for safety’s sake it is suggested that the
victim use a wire transfer service offered through

financial institutions, check cashing businesses, or large retail stores.

“After getting literally hundreds of phone calls from people who lost thousands of dollars
from scams,” stated Sgt. Jacobs, “I decided that public presentations, radio spots and
newspaper articles were not reaching nearly enough people. I decided to go to the businesses
that were wiring the money, beginning with Wal-Mart.”

Carol immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation, especially after learning
that much of the scammed money goes to terrorists. She began to gently query customers
who wanted to send money through the MoneyGram® service offered at Walmart to
determine if they might be potential scam victims, and call Sgt. Jacobs if suspicions were
raised. Carol served as a good role model, causing other WalMart employees and other
businesses and banks to buy in to the effort. Success was soon realized. In one 52-day
period, 24 scams were intercepted, saving $46,045.00 from going to scammers.

“While it might be easier and less embarrassing to just complete the customers’ requests,
Carol chose to do the right thing because she cares about people and her community,”
said Sgt. Jacobs. “She has taken it upon herself to be a champion in preventing
community loss through internet, lottery, family-in-need, or Money Gram scams.”

JOINT MEETING WITH TWO RIVERS ROTARY

Posted by Christine Kornely
Monday October 24th 12:00 noon at the Lighthouse Inn in Two Rivers.  The speaker for the program is our own Brian Jensen.  See description of presentation below:

Rotarians reach out to promote medical independence.

For the seventh year in a row, a group of district Rotarians traveled to Guatemala to provide medical services.  On January 17th, an advance team of six boarded a plan at Chicago O'Hare to set up a clinic in Oliveros, a small Guatemalan village accessible only by boat that is near the El Salvador border.  Three days later, the rest of the team followed.  Comprised of many disciplines and backgrounds, they provided front-line services to more than 1,100 residents during the five days the clinic was open.

The group of 35 included a Two Rivers Rotarian, Brian Jensen.   Tales of the journey will be shared at the Monday, October 24th meeting of the Two Rivers Rotary Club.  Among the impressions formed on the trip is the first hand realization of Rotary's impact around the world.  This Rotary-sponsored trip underscores the importance of reaching beyond a local club to grasp what it means to be a Rotarian.
PRESIDENT JOE WILL BE ASKING FOR YOUR RSVP CLOSER TO THE EVENT.
